The Process

1. Consult & Plan
Fill out the inquiry form below to share your vision. Once we connect, we will discuss your subject matter and reference photos to see if we’re a good match. My process is most successful when collectors trust my professional artistic experience to interpret the subject in my signature naturalist style.

2. Reserve Your Spot
Once we agree on the details, a 50% non-refundable retainer secures your place on my calendar. This retainer applies directly toward your final price. The production timeframe begins once the retainer is paid and all necessary reference materials are received. Other commissions on the calendar may also affect the timeframe.

3. Sketch & Approval
I will provide a preliminary sketch for your approval before I begin the final painting. This is the stage for any major composition changes. To keep your project on schedule, timely feedback is essential; the speed of the process is often determined by how quickly approvals are returned.

4. The Painting Phase
Once the sketch is approved, I begin the final work.

  • Watercolors: Typically take 4–6 weeks to complete.
  • Oil Paintings: Typically take 2–3 months due to necessary drying times.

5. Finish & Delivery
You will receive a photo of the completed piece, at which time I offer one round of minor refinements to ensure the details are just right. Once the final balance is paid, your original art will be ready for pick-up on O’ahu or shipping worldwide. (Please note: Shipping fees may apply for medium and large canvases and watercolor pieces).

Current Lead Time: 4-6 Weeks (Watercolors); 2-3 months (Oils)

Commission FAQ

Do you retain the copyright?

Yes, as the artist, I retain all rights to the image for marketing, licensing, and reproductions. The original physical painting belongs to you to personally enjoy in your home or office.

Can I request a custom size?

Absolutely. If you have a specific frame or wall space in mind, let me know in your inquiry. Price differences are minimal for smaller pieces. Commission pricing is based more on the amount of time painting, client communication, and personal value of the piece. Timeframe for completion is not substantially different compared to 11x14,” which is my typical minimum size for commissions.

Do you offer framing?

Currently, paintings are delivered unframed to allow you to choose a style that fits your home decor perfectly. A limited selection of koa wood frames may be available. (The reddish tone of koa wood typically looks best with green landscapes and botanicals.)

How long does it take?

From the time of your retainer payment to completion of the painting, watercolors can take 4-6 weeks and oils can take 2-3 months because of drying time. (Complexity of the subject plays a factor. Custom pieces smaller than 11x14" are not substantially different in their timeframe to completion.)

Project timelines are dependent on other commissions in progress and active client participation. While I strive to meet every deadline, the speed of the process is often determined by how quickly approvals (such as the initial sketch) are returned. To ensure your painting is finished within the projected window, please provide timely feedback when requested. Your timely feedback on sketches and concepts allows me to keep your project moving forward without delay. Please note that the 4-6 week or 2-3 month timeframe begins once the retainer is paid and all necessary reference materials and approvals are received.

Can I get this by Christmas?

To ensure the highest quality for every collector and to honor my scheduled commitments at local art markets, I do not start new commission projects after September 30th for oils or October 30th for watercolors. Between my busy holiday market schedule and dedicated family time, my calendar fills up quickly!

However, I am always happy to discuss future projects. I am currently accepting inquiries for my January waitlist. You can secure your spot for the new year by completing a consultation and submitting your retainer fee.

What if I'm not happy with the final painting?

My goal is to capture nature’s beauty in a way that resonates with you. When you commission a piece, I assume you have explored my portfolio and are seeking a custom work in my signature style; therefore, you should expect a result consistent with the aesthetic and technique seen in my previous paintings.

To ensure you love the final result, I involve you in the process by sending a preliminary sketch for your approval before I begin the final painting. Once the painting is complete, I offer one round of minor refinements to ensure the details are just right.

Because of the time and specialized materials involved in custom work, the 50% retainer is non-refundable. If we cannot reach a version you are satisfied with after the included revision round, you may choose to cancel the commission; in this case, the final balance is waived, and the painting remains with the studio.

How much input will I have on the final look?

Finding the right fit is important for a successful commission. My process is most successful when collectors are comfortable with my established style (as seen throughout my website) and are happy to let me lead the artistic execution of the painting.

If you are looking for a highly realistic or strictly controlled reproduction, I am not be the right artist for your needs.

However, if you love my naturalist style and trust my professional artistic experience to interpret your subject, I would love to work with you.
